Biedermeier Burled Walnut Chest of Drawers with Marble Top

Period & Origin

Circa 1820–1840 | Austrian/German Biedermeier style | Sourced in Ostia, Rome

An elegant and substantial burled walnut chest of drawers in the classical Biedermeier tradition, featuring the restrained elegance and fine proportions characteristic of early 19th-century Central European craftsmanship. The piece showcases beautifully figured burled walnut veneer with refined crossbanding detail, four deep drawers with original brass hardware, and a white marble top with grey veining.

The Biedermeier style emphasizes understated luxury: clean lines, quality materials, and meticulous construction without excessive ornamentation. This chest embodies those principles through its simple pediment, classical corner brackets carved from solid walnut, and turned wooden supports.

Construction & Details

Materials:

  • Solid walnut case with burled walnut veneer (face and drawer fronts)
  • Crossbanding detail between drawers
  • Original cast brass drawer pulls
  • Ornamental carved wooden corner brackets with classical detailing
  • White marble top with grey veining

Hardware:

  • All four original brass drawer pulls intact and functional
  • Decorative brass keyhole escutcheon

Drawers:

  • Four graduated drawers with excellent dovetail joinery
  • All drawers open and close smoothly
  • Original interior finish preserved
  • Minor cosmetic knot loss in one drawer interior (does not affect function)

Condition

Overall: Good condition, with age-appropriate patina and character consistent with a nearly 200-year-old piece.

Structural:

  • All joints sound and tight; no loose dovetails or wobbling
  • Stable structural cracks on side panels, typical of 19th-century walnut as wood naturally seasons and shifts over time. These cracks are old and stable, not actively widening.

Marble Top: Shows age-appropriate patina with penetrating discoloration in areas, consistent with the piece's history. The white marble retains its original form and sits securely. Minor surface wear and patina give it honest character.

Finish: Warm, aged patina throughout; minor surface marks and age-appropriate wear consistent with use and handling over 180+ years. The wood has developed a rich, deep honey tone.

Dimensions

  • Width: 44.5" (113 cm)
  • Depth: 23" (58.5 cm)
  • Height: 41.75" (106 cm)

This is a large, substantial piece—substantial enough to anchor a bedroom or living room without overwhelming the space.

A note on antiques: Antiques aren't new — that's the whole point. Every scratch, patina mark and sign of age is a badge of honour, not a defect. Detail photos are unfiltered and show the piece exactly as it is. We're happy to provide additional photos or videos upon request.
