French Secretary Desk with Black Veined Marble Top and Original Leather Writing Surface, circa 1850–1870
An elegant Second Empire secretary in walnut with refined proportions and authentic period craftsmanship. Black veined marble top sits above a concealed top drawer, then a fall-front with original green leather writing surface that opens smoothly to reveal fitted interior with working drawers. Upper open shelving section for display. Lower cabinet with two concealed doors opening to reveal hidden drawers. Turned legs with brass ring mounts support the piece. Solid, stable construction throughout.
Condition: Very good. Black veined marble top in excellent condition. Fall-front opens/closes smoothly. Locking mechanism on fall-front requires adjustment (needs light repair). Original green leather writing surface intact. Interior drawers functional. Hidden drawers (top and lower) accessible and functional. Wood finish shows honest patina; no significant damage to veneer or structure.
Origin: Paris, France; purchased by Italian diplomat when stationed in Paris.
