Louis Philippe Giltwood Mirror with Floral Cartouches
c. 1860s | French Origin, Roman Estate | 129 cm H × 98 cm W (50.8" × 38.6")
A substantial mirror with a continental journey—originally sourced in France and brought to Rome generations ago by Mario's family, when his father served as Italian ambassador in Paris. They acquired this piece during those years and it remained in their Roman home for decades before finding its way to us.
Louis Philippe proportions: restrained, confident, classical. The frame is rectilinear and unfussy, with carved rosettes at the corners and a linear molded edge that catches light with quiet authority. The gilt is clean and luminous, the carving precise without pretension. A few modest chips in the giltwood speak to its age and use—authentic wear that only adds to the story. This is French craftsmanship from the mid-19th century, when proportion and restraint mattered as much as ornament.
Hangs as a dining room statement, a living room focal point, or above a substantial console. Works equally in minimalist and traditional interiors. The kind of mirror that photographs beautifully and never looks dated.
Notes:
- Giltwood frame with minor age chips (stable, disclosed)
- Original mirror glass (authentic patina, minor age spotting)
- Ready to hang; hardware intact
- French-made, acquired during ambassadorial posting in Paris
- Roman estate provenance
- Mid-19th-century manufacture
- Shallow profile (6 cm / 2.4") allows versatile placement
Roman Estates sources authentic 18th–20th century Italian and European antiques directly from private Roman estates and historic dealers. Each piece is individually selected for quality, provenance, and design merit.
A note on antiques: Antiques aren't new — that's the whole point. Every scratch, patina mark and sign of age is a badge of honour, not a defect. Detail photos are unfiltered and show the piece exactly as it is. We're happy to provide additional photos or videos upon request. All sales are final, so take a good look, ask us anything, and buy what you love.
