A charming set of four hand-painted portrait miniatures of elegant ladies, each in an ornate Florentine-style gilt frame with convex glass. Sourced from a private home in Rome.
Two portraits follow the Romantic court portraiture of the 1830s: one in a lilac gown with a pearl necklace and rose at the bodice, the other in rose velvet with a jeweled brooch. The other two are in an 18th-century style: a young woman with braided hair, lace, and roses, and a blonde beauty in an ermine-trimmed wrap with a pearl hair ornament. Several carry tiny artist's marks.
The frames are richly molded in swirling acanthus and scroll motifs, with a warm antiqued gold finish over a dark green-brown ground. Each has a brass hanging loop and original green floral paper backing.
Hung together as a cluster, they make a lovely gallery wall, or use them to add romance to a powder room, hallway, or bedroom vignette.
