Early 19th Century Italian Walnut Burl Bed

Headboard & Footboard Set

A hand-crafted pair sourced directly from a Roman estate. This early 19th-century Italian bedroom suite features exquisite walnut burl veneer, delicate inlaid foliate details, and hand-carved shell motifs—hallmarks of fine Italian cabinetmaking from the Neoclassical era.

The headboard showcases a graceful serpentine crest with carved shell cartouche; the footboard mirrors this elegance at smaller scale. Burled walnut grain is enhanced throughout with contrasting light-wood inlay work executed in hand-cut grooves. Carved wooden legs with shell fan details complete the set.

Sourced directly from Rome, this bed carries authentic patina of age and the warmth of nearly two centuries in Italian light. One leg was recently professionally restored; original elements retain their hand-crafted character.

About Mattress Support Following the historical practice in Italy, these headboard and footboard panels are designed to accommodate a modern bed frame insert (standard metric or US sizes). This is the authentic approach—Italian beds of this period were never meant to be sealed systems, but rather to accept the mattress support technology of their time. Today, a standard modern frame insert works seamlessly with these pieces.

A genuine antique with the marks of its long life—not a reproduction. Pairs beautifully with a modern bed frame base.

Roman Estates sources authentic 18th–20th century Italian and European antiques directly from private Roman estates and historic dealers. Each piece is individually selected for quality, provenance, and design merit.

A note on antiques: Antiques aren't new — that's the whole point. Every scratch, patina mark and sign of age is a badge of honour, not a defect. Detail photos are unfiltered and show the piece exactly as it is. We're happy to provide additional photos or videos upon request. All sales are final, so take a good look, ask us anything, and buy what you love.
