Italian Renaissance Revival Walnut Credenza with Hand-Carved Caryatids and Grey Marble Top, Trapezoidale circa 1850–1880
A substantial cabinet born of deliberate craftsmanship. Two hand-carved caryatids—full-length classical male figures with bearded faces and foliate drapery—anchor the stiles. Below, acanthus leaf capitals crown simple block feet, each leaf carved with anatomical precision. Two paneled doors with restrained geometric frames open smoothly to interior storage. Above, a frieze drawer fitted with two original brass pulls, the original key still turning in its lock. Grey marble top bears honest witness to use: four small holes where something once anchored, the surface itself showing age-appropriate patina. Everything works. Everything is original.
Condition: Excellent. Original grey marble top with period wear and patina—evidence of a working surface, not neglect. Doors functional and properly hung. Frieze drawer operates smoothly. All hardware original and intact. Carving remains crisp; walnut shows warm patina consistent with age. No structural concerns.

Provenance
From Rome, from a family with roots in Sorrento. Sourced as a working piece from a domestic interior. The hand-carved caryatids, the acanthus leaf details, the original marble, and the intact hardware all point to mid-19th-century Italian workshop tradition—skilled work without theatrical excess. The original key, still functional in the frieze drawer, speaks to careful stewardship across generations.
Styling & Use
A credenza that commands attention through presence rather than ornament. Functions as dining room storage, bar, or bedroom cabinet. The carved figures lend character and human scale. Suitable for period interiors, eclectic spaces, or contemporary settings that value documented craftsmanship and Italian provenance. The substantial proportions and original materials make this a collector's piece—authentic evidence of 19th-century making.
Roman Estates sources authentic 18th–20th century Italian and European antiques directly from private Roman estates and historic dealers. Each piece is individually selected for quality, provenance, and design merit.
A note on antiques: Antiques aren't new — that's the whole point. Every scratch, patina mark and sign of age is a badge of honour, not a defect. Detail photos are unfiltered and show the piece exactly as it is. We're happy to provide additional photos or videos upon request. All sales are final, so take a good look, ask us anything, and buy what you love.
