Victorian Walnut Oval Extending Dining Table with Pedestal Base, circa 1860–1890
From a Sorrento family, sourced in Rome. A table built for living—oval walnut top that extends with three leaves stored ingeniously within the closed structure, a practical solution born of 19th-century pragmatism. Single turned pedestal base with restrained ring detailing supports four splayed legs. Hand-planed surfaces bear the quiet evidence of decades of service: honest scratches, soft patina, the occasional mark of time. The mechanism works as it should. Everything solid.
Condition: Good. Surface wear consistent with age and use—the kind that cannot be replicated. Old termite holes present but structurally sound. Joints stable. Legs sturdy. Leaf storage and extension system fully functional.

The Piece
A working table from a working family. The engineering is elegant in its simplicity—leaves disappear when not needed, the base is spare, the proportions balance use with grace. No ornament for its own sake. What you see is what it is: walnut, skill, time.
Roman Estates sources authentic 18th–20th century Italian and European antiques directly from private Roman estates and historic dealers. Each piece is individually selected for quality, provenance, and design merit.
A note on antiques: Antiques aren't new — that's the whole point. Every scratch, patina mark and sign of age is a badge of honour, not a defect. Detail photos are unfiltered and show the piece exactly as it is. We're happy to provide additional photos or videos upon request. All sales are final, so take a good look, ask us anything, and buy what you love.
