Italian Walnut Occasional Table with Sorrento-Style Floral Marquetry Top and Tripod Base, circa 1840–1870
An elegant side table born of quiet refinement. The top—walnut with hand-inlaid floral marquetry in Sorrento style, botanical subjects rendered in contrasting woods—sits above a classically turned pedestal. Below, three cabriole legs with carved scrollwork anchor the piece with restrained grace. Everything original. Everything works.
Condition: Very good. Original walnut finish with honest patina consistent with age. Floral marquetry intact—no missing pieces, surface showing appropriate wear. Pedestal turned cleanly, legs solid and stable with no structural concerns. The top displays the marks of use: minor surface wear that speaks to its function as a working occasional table.

Provenance
From Rome, sourced from a Roman family. The floral marquetry in Sorrento style—delicate botanical subjects inlaid into the walnut surface—speaks to mid-19th-century Italian craftsmanship. These tables were made for intimate spaces: beside a chair, in a corner, as a surface for a lamp or a book. The marquetry work suggests a maker of considerable skill.
Styling & Use
A refined occasional table that functions as bedside table, corner accent, or display surface. The floral top draws the eye without demanding attention. Works equally well in period interiors, eclectic spaces, or contemporary settings valuing documented craftsmanship and original materials. Ideal for collectors of Italian furniture, Sorrento marquetry, and Victorian-era tables with authentic provenance.
Roman Estates sources authentic 18th–20th century Italian and European antiques directly from private Roman estates and historic dealers. Each piece is individually selected for quality, provenance, and design merit.
A note on antiques: Antiques aren't new — that's the whole point. Every scratch, patina mark and sign of age is a badge of honour, not a defect. Detail photos are unfiltered and show the piece exactly as it is. We're happy to provide additional photos or videos upon request. All sales are final, so take a good look, ask us anything, and buy what you love.
